The Secret Garden Lessons for Homeschool

It wasn’t until I was an adult that I sat down to enjoy the classic book, The Secret Garden. This lovely book is filled with finding happiness, admiring the beauty of creation, enjoying delicious food, developing true friendships, and so much more.

We spent the past winter simplifying our homeschool. Consecrating on life skills, rather than curriculum. This book opened up so many conversations and opportunities to dig into life learning. We took many of the delicious savory and sweet foods from this book and created a few wonderful recipes to share with you.

Below is just one of the many recipes we created in the Unlocking the Secret study. I hope you’ll enjoy baking these shortbread cookies filled with raspberry jam with your little ones!

Short Bread Cookies with Raspberry Jam:

Ingredients:

2 1/2 cup all-purpose flour

1/2 cup granulated sugar

1/2 tsp salt

1 cup salted butter (cubed and cold)

2 tsp vanilla

2-3 tbsp ice cold water

1 jar of unsweetened raspberry jam

Directions:

  1. Mix the flour, salt, and sugar in a large bowl.

  2. Using a pastry cutter or food processor, cut the cold butter cubes into the flour mixture.

  3. Add the vanilla and cold water. Then form it into a dough ball.

  4. Refrigerate for at least 1-2 hours.

  5. Preheat the oven to 325-degrees and roll out the dough to approximately 1/4" thickness.

  6. Cut the cookies out using the top of a glass or circle cookie cutter.

  7. Using your thumb or the back of a spoon, create a bowl shape and fill with about a tablespoon of raspberry jam.

  8. Bake in the 325-degree oven for 14-18 minutes or until "slightly" golden brown. Be sure not to over bake these to ensure to cookie isn't overly crunchy after cooling.
