God Made the Rain Forest

We’re still in a very slow rhythm for school. I have thoroughly loved our time together as a family during this holiday season. If you follow me on social media, you know that I love being in the kitchen with our children. I have so many precious memories of my childhood that were created in the kitchen with my mom. I hope to create the same memories by being intestinal with our homeschool years.

We love baking together but since we baked so many cookies and sweet treats over the Christmas season, we decided to make natural play dough in the kitchen instead. We made three different colors to go along with the book we read. Below I’ve listed the ingredients and directions for each.

Play Dough Recipe

Red:

2 cups flour

1 cup salt

2 tbsp cream of tarter

2 tbsp olive oil

½ cup water

2 cups fresh cranberries

In a medium sauce pan, boil water and cranberries together until reduced. Set aside.

In a separate large bowl, add all of the dry ingredients and mix. Add in the olive oil and cooled cranberries (I only used about ¾ of this mixture). Use your judgement on the consistency. Mix it all together using a hand mixer. Form a ball and allow it to sit for about 10 minutes.

Green:

2 cups flour

1 cup salt

2 tbsp cream of tarter

2 tbsp olive oil

½ cup water

1 cup fresh spinach

In a blender, add water and spinach. Blend until it’s a liquid puree. Set aside.

In a separate large bowl, add all of the dry ingredients and mix. Add in the olive oil and spinach juice. Use your judgement on the consistency. Mix it all together using a hand mixer. Form a ball and allow it to sit for about 10 minutes.

Orange:

2 cups flour

1 cup salt

2 tbsp cream of tarter

2 tbsp olive oil

Juice of 3 oranges

Zest of 1 orange

Red and yellow food coloring

In a large bowl, add all of the dry ingredients and mix. Add in the olive oil, food coloring, zest and orange juice. Use your judgement on the consistency. I added about ¼ cup of water to this mix after everything started to form for more liquid. Mix it all together using a hand mixer. Form a ball and allow it to sit for about 10 minutes.

That’s it!

We made 3 different colors so that we can make parrots that went with our sweet rainforest book. We added some small twigs to form a beak an eye. This turned out to be such a hit with the kids and they can’t to read this book again and create some more animals from the rainforest.

If you’re looking for a beautiful book that explores creation, this is the one! Our children loved reading through Sarah Collins new book in her God Made series called God Made the Rain Forest. Press on the picture or the link below to learn more about her adorable book that takes you on a trip through the rainforest.

I hope you all enjoy this book recommendation and this play dough recipe as much as we did. The smell around here is amazing!

Come back next week for more bake and read ideas to get kids in the kitchen with you.

Xoxo,

Amanda
