Story Time Bake

Story Time Bake

One of my favorite things to do with our little ones on our slow homeschool mornings is to get them in the kitchen. Not only is baking and cooking a wonderful life skill to possess, but there are so many subjects that we cover in our story time bake days together. I have started incorporating a story time bake day at least one time a week in our homeschool. I simply choose a book to read to them and we come up with a baked good that we’d like to bake that goes along with the story. It’s a fantastic way for them to stay engaged and retain the information from each read.

Baking with children doesn’t have to be elaborate for them to learn and create memories together. This week we proved that by baking a basic vanilla cake from a box and then we made the icing from scratch. I made this recipe up as we went along and it turned out amazing. I want to share the recipe with you in hopes you will find it fun to make with your little ones.

As you can see, we read The Little Red Hen this week and had such a beautiful time in the kitchen! I’ve seen several blog and social media posts over the last couple weeks mentioning the importance of having children contribute to household chores and thought this book would be a great read for us. We absolutely have our children do chores and expect them to be helpful around the house. This was a fantastic read to reiterate the importance of taking care of the things the Lord has bless us with.

Of course, we did talk about kindness and sharing at the end of the story as well. My oldest told me “we should be kind to others even when they’ve wronged us.” Consider therefore the kindness and sternness of God: sternness to those who fell, but kindness to you, provided that you continue in his kindness. Otherwise, you will also be cut off. Romans 11:22

I’m certainly not a baker or any sort of trained chef, but I like to get creative in the kitchen and often come up with my own recipes. I hope you enjoy and have a beautiful time creating memories with your babies in the kitchen!!

Frosting Icing Recipe

2 cups diced fresh peaches

¼ cup packed brown sugar

1 teaspoon cinnamon

1 teaspoon vanilla

1 stick salted butter

1 stick Crisco

4 oz cream cheese

2 lbs. powdered sugar

Pinch salt

2 fresh peaches (for garnish)

In a small bowl, add diced peaches, brown sugar, cinnamon, and vanilla. Mix by hand and let sit for 15-20 minutes. In separate bowl, cream the butter, Crisco, and cream cheese together with a hand mixer. Set aside. Blend peach mixture until smooth. Strain flavored peaches into cream cheese mixture along with the pinch of salt and blend. Start adding the powdered sugar a cup at a time until desired consistency.

I let the vanilla cake layers cool completely before spreading the first layer of frosting on. Frost “crumb layer” and place in the freezer for 2 hours. Take back out of the freezer and spread second coat. Assemble cake and cut up peaches to go along the bottom and top for garnishment.

I hope you enjoy!! Happy baking and remember to willfully serve His children throughout your homeschool day!

Xoxo,

Amanda
